Did God cause the tornadoes? As our church has been responding to the devastating tornadoes, I was especially moved by one story. A baby was found in the middle of a field. She had been sucked out of her trailer home and dropped some distance away. It sounds like her family died instantly. She died some time later at the hospital. Not everything in life has a happy ending. Personally, I don’t believe God goes around zapping people with tornadoes and lightning bolts. My son Joshua reminded me one time, “It was Zeus who did that, not God.” We may be experiencing the consequences of our lack of care and stewardship of our earth with some of these storms and their severity. Then again, there has always been a certain random violence at work on this earth. I don’t know why. I do know that news like this makes me want to go home and hug my children and not take life for granted. As for God, I figure God suffers with us through the storms. In some cosmic wisdom I can’t fathom, God does not save us from every storm in life. As Romans 8 reminds us, though, God is with us through it all.
